Story of Mr. Kiran Kathiriya, the founder

Mr. Kiranbhai Kathiria, the founder of Bhoomi Agro Industries, is a self-made entrepreneur. His mission is to make farming easy yet more profitable with modern Agri machinery.

He established this company in 1999 and started manufacturing Ox Driven Seed Drills. The goal was to provide high-quality yet cost-effective agricultural equipment that all farmers would afford. And within a decade, he took the organization to new heights.

From a techno-enthusiast to an entrepreneur

His journey as a techno-enthusiast had begun at the age of 12. He started disassembling several electronic items to understand their spare parts and functionality. It included television, radio, refrigerator, iron, tube light, and wristwatches.

His next step was to land a job in Rajkot, one of the top industrial hubs in Gujarat, at a daily wage of Rs.60. Within six months, his performance landed him on the responsibility of the entire production unit. Another six months passed, and now he was confident enough to start his own business. So he decided to move on and establish a manufacturing facility.

As he began his new adventure, he needed guidance and support. And he got it from his brother-in-law Mr. Ghanshyambhai Meghani.

The going was not easy at the beginning like any other human endeavor. However, the company manufactured 14 and 50 units of Ox Driven Seed Drills in the first and second year respectively. But more than half were sold on credit.

Lessons learned the hard way

The third year, 2001, was a milestone when we manufactured 500 pcs of Seed Drills. But unfortunately, a massive earthquake hit the Kutch region of Gujarat that badly affected our business. The government decided to provide Seed Drills at half the price and called for the tenders. Unaware of the process, the company made a significant loss. However, it was a lesson learned the hard way.

The leader decided to sell directly in Junagadh, Somnath, and other villages in the Saurashtra region to cover the loss. It not only helped us to learn hard salesmanship but also helped us survive in critical situations.

In 2002, Mr. Kiranbhai Kathiriya got married and began his new chapter in life.

In the same year, he started looking for opportunities to utilize his resources and generate more revenue. As a result, they got a large order of dustbin containers. But again, it turned out to be a very low-margin project, so the company decided not to take more such assignments in the future.

Apart from this, Mr. Kiranbhai also decided to manufacture the spare parts of textile machinery. The goal was to generate revenue that, in turn, would support the production of Agri machinery at Bhoomi Agro. The move worked well and boosted the confidence of the management.

Morale-boosting events

Meanwhile, the sales of seed drills gained momentum in 2006-2007, and the company valuation reached 25 lacs by 2009. These were indeed morale-boosting events. The owner then decided to move the production to the Mavdi area in Rajkot with an investment of 13,11000/-.

He also purchased land in the Metoda Industrial area in 2010, considering a future expansion. It was a big decision, and it put pressure on the company to make a profit of at least Rs.2 lacs every month.

However, this burden worked like a motivational factor for everybody in the company, regardless of their position. Its agricultural implements manufacturing business started growing with clarity on target. Hence Mr. Kiranbhai Kathiriya decided to stop textile parts production and focused on agricultural machinery manufacturing.

Raise of a leader in Agri machinery manufacturing industry

By now, the company was gaining traction and popularity as a trusted brand in the market. As a result, they got a game-changing order for Seed Drills from Maharashtra in 2014. It was like a dream come true, giving a boost to the confidence and energy of the management and employees.

It also played a crucial role in shifting our mindset from a local, small-scale manufacturer to a significant player in the industry. It was no less than an achievement.

As the company started gaining market share, competitors were ready to outperform us in every way they could. But it also established us as a leading manufacturer of the best-quality seed cum fertilizer drill manufacturer in India.

The order was divided among multiple suppliers, and we had a small part of it, i.e.500 pcs. But our products proved our dedication to the quality and performance during the inspection. While our seed drills were easy to assemble and passed all tests, our competitors’ machines couldn’t even be assembled.

This event established our expertise and trustworthiness among the buyers. Next, we got the orders of 2500 pcs and 1000 pcs respectively. And we manufactured a total of 4000 seed drills.

Mr. Kiranbhai Kathiriya, being a visionary entrepreneur, decided to bring all the units in one place and increase production. So he purchased a land of 3000 Sq. Meters. And now the company had a responsibility to make Rs.10 lacs of revenue per month to justify the expansion.

Becoming a multi-product agricultural implements manufacturer

By 2017, the company became a leader in manufacturing high-quality seed cum fertilizer drill machines. But it was now time to think about expanding the product range and becoming a multi-product organization.

Mr. Kiranbhai believed in specialization and individual expertise, that when combined, can accomplish complex projects involving multiple tasks. So he joined a training program run by Smmart, a training and consulting firm for entrepreneurs. It helped him in changing his approach to management. I.e., from centralized to decentralized.

By decentralizing the management, operations, and decision-making processes, now Mr. Kiranbhai can focus more on his core tasks. Previously, he used to manage everything himself. And this habit had counterproductive effects on both professional and personal life. But now, he has a team of qualified people who are experts and experienced in their respective fields.

Now Mr. Kiranbhai was able to spend more time and energy on research, innovations, and developments of new products. Ultimately, the company’s management, productivity, product quality, sales, and revenue improved as expected.

The company has been among the top agricultural machinery manufacturers in India since 2017. It provides all types of equipment required in farming. It includes;

  • Tillage Implements
  • Sowing Implements
  • Crop Protection Implements
  • Harvesting Implements
  • Post Harvesting Implements

Leadership that inspires

Mr. Kiranbhai Kathiriya passionately follows Mr. Ratan Tata for his leadership and entrepreneurship skills. Further, he believes that the quality and customer-oriented approach builds trust and makes a product successful.

His vision is to bring technology to farming, making it more lucrative and fruitful. And his ultimate goal is to build a global brand that can represent India in Agri technology and make Indians proud.

By following his vision successfully, the company manufactures agricultural implements that meet high-quality standards and expectations of customers.
